If the Republicans win control of Congress, the woke era – our idiocracy – is over
Twitter executives were terminated yesterday because they followed a narrow, intolerant, and moralizing ideology to justify a toxic cancel culture.
Free societies will not tolerate censoring speech on social media. Big tech and government support a woke political ideology that seeks to change our country in ways that many Americans neither understand nor support. Left unchecked, the government will become more powerful and authoritarian, eroding liberties and prosperity.
I’m reminded of the movie Idiocracy in which a man wakes up 500 years hence to find he is the smartest man in a dumbed-down and impoverished world. Idiocracy became a cultural touchstone for discussing America’s educational, economic, cultural and societal decline. That decline may be at the heart of why socialism is the ascending political ideology of the left.
Woke is an old term, first appearing in the 1940s to mean being awake to social injustice. Now used pejoratively, it means to follow a narrow, intolerant, and moralizing ideology that uses cancel culture and identity politics to shut down opposition.
It is self-evident to say that politicians who advocate woke policies are woke politicians. Saying so does not weaponize the characterization nor mock those that acknowledge racial disparities. It accurately describes it.
Centrist Democrats use ‘wokeness’ against the more left-leaning members of their party, accusing the left of using cancel culture to damage the employment prospects of those who are not considered sufficiently woke. They are right to do so. To its critics, ‘wokeness’ is an insincere form of performative activism that uses virtue signaling to show how morally and virtuous someone, party or company is. It is easy, facile and ultimately meaningless.
My takeaway is that many people are tired of being lectured by political activists and politicians who use identity politics against those who criticize government fondness for social engineering. But the woke brigade has overplayed its hand by insulting many of those whose support they depend on. If you’re going to blame people for historic wrongs, make sure they are responsible for what you say they did. White or Black, we cannot change our genes or ancestry.
Twitter executives were terminated yesterday because they followed a narrow, intolerant, and moralizing ideology to justify a toxic cancel culture. Their downfall is proof that censorship and identity politics are unsustainable business models.
‘Wokeness’ is why Democrats will lose Congress in November. It's reflected in the ill-suited and incompetent people Biden hires and reflected in the growth and job-killing policies he pushes.
If the Republicans win control of Congress, the woke era – our idiocracy – is over.
